The Story

The storm had passed, leaving the air crisp and fresh, scented with damp earth and wildflowers. It was a warm spring afternoon, the kind that hinted at the changing season with a gentle breeze and golden sunlight filtering through the lingering clouds. Serena adjusted the strap of her camera bag as she stepped into the meadow, her boots sinking slightly into the soft, rain-kissed grass.

Ahead of her, Ella Rose twirled in delight, the late afternoon sun catching the metallic sheen of the rainbow balloon she held in her hands. The colors shimmered with every movement, reflecting the celebration of the day—St. Patrick’s Day.

“This place is magical,” Ella Rose said, turning toward Serena with a smile. She wore a light green lace tank top that fluttered slightly with the breeze, paired with white shorts adorned with shamrocks, rainbows, and tiny pots of gold in honor of the holiday. Her red hair was braided over one shoulder, loose strands escaping to frame her face.

Serena grinned, lifting her camera. “That’s why I brought you here. The light after a storm is perfect for photos. And I had a feeling that today might bring a little luck.”

They had set out that afternoon with the goal of capturing something special: Serena wanted to practice her portrait skills, and Ella Rose had been more than happy to be her model. The meadow, stretching wide and golden with wildflowers, was the perfect backdrop. Small white blossoms mingled with the yellow buttercups, swaying gently in the breeze.

As Ella Rose lowered herself to sit among the flowers, Serena adjusted the focus on her camera. The balloon reflected light in an array of shimmering colors, shifting as Ella Rose tilted it slightly.

“Hold it up just a little—yeah, like that,” Serena instructed. “The light is catching the edges perfectly.”

Ella Rose laughed, her braid slipping over her shoulder as she tilted her head. “Do I look mysterious? Dreamy? Like a girl lost in thought?”

“You look like a painting,” Serena replied, snapping another shot.

The warm air hummed with the sounds of spring—birds calling from the trees, the rustling of the wildflowers, and the distant babbling of a small stream beyond the meadow. In the distance, a black and white cow meandered lazily toward them, her calf trailing close behind. Ella Rose glanced over and gasped.

“Oh! Look at them!” she whispered.

Serena lowered her camera for a moment, watching as the pair wandered through the field. The cow’s dark eyes were calm as she plodded forward, pausing to nose at the wildflowers. The calf, still unsteady on its feet, sniffed curiously at the grass before bounding after its mother.

“They’re perfect,” Serena murmured, already snapping pictures.

Ella Rose reached out a tentative hand, but the cow merely flicked her tail and continued her stroll, unbothered by their presence. The calf gave a little hop before nuzzling against its mother’s side.

Then, just as Serena was about to take another photo, Ella Rose gasped.

“Serena—look!”

Serena lifted her gaze, and her breath caught.

A rainbow had appeared, stretching in brilliant hues across the sky. The last remnants of the storm clouds framed it, casting a soft glow over the meadow. Ella Rose, still holding the balloon, was positioned directly beneath it, her expression alight with wonder.

Serena didn’t hesitate. She lifted her camera and pressed the shutter, capturing the moment before it could slip away. Click. Click. The rainbow reflected in the balloon, its colors shimmering and shifting with the light. The wind lifted a few stray curls from Ella Rose’s braid, adding an ethereal quality to the shot.

“Now, this is perfect,” Serena breathed, snapping another photo.

Ella Rose turned toward her, eyes bright. “You think so?”

“I know so.” Serena lowered her camera, grinning. “This is exactly what I was hoping for, something natural, something unexpected. It’s like St. Patrick’s Day luck brought us a gift.”

Ella Rose stood up and laughed, spinning in the flowers again, the balloon bobbing with her movement. The rainbow lingered above, a fleeting masterpiece in the sky.

Serena knew that no matter how many photos she took, nothing could fully capture the magic of the moment. But as she watched her friend dance beneath the colors, her braid swaying, the cow and her calf wandering through the meadow, she felt something settle within her—a quiet joy, a connection to the beauty around her.

She had come here to practice her photography, but what she had captured was more than just an image. It was a memory, vivid and full of life, sealed within the golden light and lingering colors of the rainbow.

And some moments, she thought, were meant to be chased—just like rainbows.
